The trek culminates at Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m), where trekkers can explore panoramic viewpoints like Tsergo Ri (4,985m) or Kyanjin Ri (4,770m) for awe-inspiring views of the Langtang Himalaya range. With rich Buddhist culture, diverse wildlife, and well-paced acclimatization, this trek is an excellent choice for those seeking both adventure and cultural immersion in the heart of the Himalayas.
Day 1 – Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (1,460m)
By jeep, we head north towards the Himalayas and Tibet. The road passes through the small town of Trisuli before climbing up to Dhunche, the district headquarters of Langtang. We continue along the Pasang Lhamu Highway, named after the famous Nepalese mountaineer, before descending to Syabrubesi—a large Tamang village and home to a Tibetan refugee camp.
We choose the balcony trail rather than the forest path. The trail climbs steeply at first before following terraced fields. After passing through the village of Khamjing, we continue through forests and clearings until we reach Sherpagaon for the night. This region is home to the Tamang people, whose ancestors arrived from Tibet, just like the Sherpas. Their houses are adorned with colorful prayer flags, known as “Lungta” or “wind horses.”
The trail continues along the mountainside to the Rimche hamlet, where we join the classic Langtang trail. We ascend gradually through the forest towards Ghore Tabela, home to red pandas and Himalayan monals (Daphe pheasants). As the valley widens, we enjoy stunning views of Langtang and Langtang Ri peaks.
We continue a steady but gradual ascent to reach the glacial valley of Langtang. Buddhist symbols are omnipresent along the way: chörtens, prayer flags, prayer wheels, and mani walls. After passing the site of the former Langtang village, we arrive in Mundu for the night. At this altitude, we take shorter stages to allow proper acclimatization.
A short trek brings us to Kyanjin, a large settlement at the foot of towering peaks. The trail crosses beautiful pastures where yaks and dris (female yaks) graze. Depending on the season, we may visit a cheese factory established 40 years ago by the Swiss. The afternoon is dedicated to excursions or relaxation, allowing us to admire the 7,000m-high Langtang Lirung, Naya Kang, and Ganchenpo.
For those who wish, we ascend one of the two viewpoints overlooking Kyanjin. The choice depends on the conditions. These near-5,000m peaks offer a breathtaking panorama of the Langtang Himalaya range. At the summit chörten, we place stones and prayer flags. Others may choose an excursion to the pastures towards Ganja La and the eastern valley. We return to our lodge for the night.
We retrace our steps, but this gradual descent allows us to fully enjoy the snow-capped peaks around us.
After breakfast, we continue descending along the Langtang Khola, passing through dense forests before reaching Syabrubesi.
We take the same route back to Kathmandu by jeep.
